Lecture 5:Review--youtube

The one I agree with most and my comment on it.
Quote 2
“…Through their many activities – uploading, viewing, discussing, and collaborating—the YouTube community forms a network of creative practice. In his book on the social worlds of art, music and design, Howard Becker (1982) described this kind of formation as an ‘art world’—’the network of people whose cooperative activity, organised via their joint knowledge of conventional means of doing things, produces the kind of art works that art world is noted for’ (Becker, 1982: x). He argues that the construction and negotiation of aesthetic values and ‘proper’ techniques is not confined to academics or experts, but involves everyone who contributes to the process of cultural production, including audiences. Similarly, on YouTube, aesthetic values, cultural forms, and creative techniques are normalised via the collective activities and judgements of the entire social network—forming an informal and emergent (and by far from homogeneous) ‘art world’ that is specific to YouTube”.

I agree with Quote 2 the most. It's because from my point of view, the emergence of youtube did serve as the best example of social creativity. People seem to have greater freedom to show their talents and ideas through broadcasting their video on youtube. For example, teenagers may film the incident of Bus Uncle, and thus provoke the social discussion and become the hot issue throughout the world. Besides, the complaint choir--compose the songs with the lyrics collected from the public is also published through the youtube. therefore, youtube can be said to be the " network of creative pratice" and making an "art world".

  1. This 'art world' always inspire our lives. We often see many videos were created after an incident has happened and has been uploaded on youtube. Like the example of bus uncle. Someone even created songs for this incident.
Also, not just the complaint choir, many bands will also upload their works on youtube and let us to appreciate and give comments. It's really a good channel for people and it encourages creation.
